  寫作必以觀念或思想為先導(dǎo),這是一條不變的法則。對于批判性思維的培養(yǎng)和高級寫作能力的提升就更為如此!队^念的生成:主題寫作讀本》就是一本為達(dá)此目的而編撰的英美大學(xué)一年級寫作課教材,在中國適用于英語專業(yè)本科高年級閱讀和寫作課。所謂“觀念的生成”,說的是作文中所要表達(dá)的思想,大致要回答下面這些“說來容易寫起來難”的問題:思想從哪兒來?是關(guān)于什么的?該如何表達(dá)?怎么去總結(jié)和評價?本書通過理解、生成、擴(kuò)展和應(yīng)用思想這四個步驟來提高學(xué)生的批判性思維能力和寫作能力。理解就是理解所讀文本的特殊觀點;生成就是通過這種理解性閱讀讓學(xué)生提出自己的觀點;擴(kuò)展就是擴(kuò)展文本的語境,使其與其他相關(guān)文本聯(lián)系起來,擴(kuò)大思考的幅度;應(yīng)用就是在這三個步驟之后讓學(xué)生將理解、生成和擴(kuò)展的思想用于自己的寫作實踐。全書共分八章,除第一章總序外,其他七章匯集的文章中都就大學(xué)生所敏感的問題進(jìn)行了熱烈的討論:年輕人的反叛精神,成長的煩惱,個人主義、孤獨(dú)和異化,大學(xué)生的身份,金錢、社會階級和自我,個人的權(quán)利以及夢想或理想等。所有文本不但思想性強(qiáng),而且語言精湛,都是名家名篇。學(xué)生既能在無垠的思想海洋里暢游,又能在增進(jìn)思考能力的同時學(xué)到雋美的語言。

作者簡介:
  Quentin Miller is Associate Professor of English at Suffolk University in Boston where he teaches composition, fiction writing, and literature. Professor Miller is the author of "John Updike and the Cold War," and the editor of "Re-Viewing James Baldwin: Things Not Seen." He is also the editor of the forthcoming "Prose and Cons: New Essays on Contemporary U.S. Prison Literature," and he is on the editorial board of "The Heath Anthology of American Literature." His articles have appeared in such journals as "American Literature," "Legacy: A Journal of American Women Writers," "The Hemingway Review," and "American Literary Realism."
