本書是大學英語提高階段的通選課教材，采用電子教程光盤與紙質版教材相結合的編寫模式，配套使用。
紙質版教材：供課堂教學使用，內容包括美國、加拿大、英國、愛爾蘭、澳大利亞和新西蘭等英語六國概況，任課教師可根據教學要求和學生情況對上述國家進行選擇性教學。
電子教程光盤：電子教程光盤供拓展學習使用，內容更加豐富，為課堂教學內容的拓展與延伸，包含大量精美插圖和音視頻教學資料；涵蓋六大部分內容，分為美國、加拿大、英國、愛爾蘭、澳大利亞、新西蘭，以及新加坡、南非和印度等九國的概況，分為十八章進行介紹。
配套習題：有各類練習題七百余道。每節(jié)附練習題10題（SectionExercises），習題型式包括正誤判斷、多項選擇和連線等客觀題型；每章后附綜合練習題15-20題（ChapterExercises）主要形式為填空、短語解釋和簡答等主觀題型。練習題部分的設計可為學生通過四、六級考試和研究生英語入學考試提供幫助。配套習題附于電子教程上。向授課老師贈送（（英語國家概況電子教程》（教師版）。
